3rd Quarter | Week 1 | Discussion
Enumerate the 4 answers on "What is literature for?" based on the video. In your own words, explain each in 2-3 sentences.
a. It saves time.
Literature helps us experience a series of events that would usually
take a lot of time to experience ourselves. It gives us realistic simulations
through our imaginations about infinite situations that we can’t fully
experience in real life. In doing so, we get to live entirely different lives
at different times and places in the comfort of our own chairs.
b. It makes you
nicer.
Literature
shows us different perspectives of different people/characters, and it helps us
expand our views regarding the ideals, opinions, and thought processes of other
people. It makes it easier for us to put ourselves in our own shoes. With this,
we will become considerate and understanding, and the way we empathize with
other people will improve.
c. It’s a cure for
loneliness.
Reading
is more than a distraction as it also helps us in our own reflections. Through
reading, we can learn more about ourselves by relating to the characters and
their experiences. Through literature, we can also learn words and terminologies
that can define us.
d. It prepares you
for failure.
Reading
and learning about the mistakes and failures of people gives us the epiphany
that failure is inevitable. It shows us the realism that success is not always
guaranteed in life, and we must accept failure as a part of the process rather
than giving up. Also, it shows us different possibilities that we can choose to
take by learning from other people’s mistakes.
