In what ways can you as a Filipino reader be affected by such works (short stories in Tagalog) that endeavor to open the minds of people on socio-political and moral issues confronting the country?

Reading literary works regarding such topics can give me awareness as a citizen of my country. Stories written in the third person’s point of view will provide me an overall view of a specific issue that the characters face. Meanwhile, stories written from a character’s point of view will give me a much deeper understanding of how that particular issue came to be.

For instance, stories about chivalry, heroism, patriotism, and martyrdom are written in vivid imagery and descriptions. This is to make it so that readers like me can understand the characters and the plight they face. This includes the values and norms that society had during the specific time the story was in. From society’s internal and external structure in the past, we can easily deduce how a character’s morals and beliefs came to be.

We can take it as if the authors of such stories made a world of simulation with the readers as its observers. The readers can observe the entirety of the story from different perspectives but have no real power to change anything. The feelings of helplessness made it possible so the readers can sympathize with the characters of the story. With the readers being engrossed, different emotions can be evoked from them depending on what the author wants them to feel as if they’re the ones experiencing the situations themselves. This brilliant mechanism made it easier for the readers to connect with the people inside the story and understand the socio-political and moral issues they face during that time.

The readers can then put themselves in similar situations (mentally) and figure out how they would approach those situations differently. This knowledge can be applied in today’s society as a basis. Understanding such concepts can help us learn from past mistakes so that its repetition won’t happen again. In short, stories regarding such topics provide me with insights that can help me grasp my country’s situation to evaluate which stands I can and should take.
