3rd Quarter | Week 3 | Discussion

  1. What do you like more - reading 21st Century Literature (Manga) or watching its video counterpart (anime) like Naruto, Sailormoon, and others? Why? Anime versions of any manga could either be excellent or disappointing (there are no in-betweens). It is primarily a fight between both expectations and reality where reality often flops. There are times where animators leave out details in the anime, making the story lose substance. There are also times where episodes are either rushed or unnecessarily prolonged. The lack of story play and the inconsistent pacing is why I prefer reading manga more than watching its video counterpart. Of course, there are anime that actually delivers, so this is just my general preference. However, the amount of disappointing anime created to promote the manga compared to high-quality anime is astonishingly high. 2. In the example 3D ANIMATION of Sailormoon, the old version of the anime (2D) was shown on 3:19 onwards. What can you say about the...

3rd Quarter | Week 2 | Discussion 2

Give 1 Filipino literature that you like. Give a short description of what it is about. Why do you like it? “Ang Langgam at Tipaklong” (The Ant and the Grasshopper) was the first Filipino Literature I read as a young child. Despite reading multiple works over the years, this storybook still stays close to my heart. It is a story about the lazy grasshopper who did nothing but frolic all day and the hardworking ant who always forages. One day, the rain came. The grasshopper was washed away by the storm as the ant lays comfortably in his home. After the rain, the grasshopper has no food to eat because rain has swept away all the crops. In despair, he went to the ant to ask for food. Now, there are two versions of the ending of this story. In the Filipino version (the one I first read), the ant gave him food and nurtured him back to health. Meanwhile, in the original version, the ant only had enough food for himself, so the grasshopper could only starve to death. Either way,...

3rd Quarter | Week 2 | Discussion 1

In what ways can you as a Filipino reader be affected by such works (short stories in Tagalog) that endeavor to open the minds of people on socio-political and moral issues confronting the country? Reading literary works regarding such topics can give me awareness as a citizen of my country. Stories written in the third person’s point of view will provide me an overall view of a specific issue that the characters face. Meanwhile, stories written from a character’s point of view will give me a much deeper understanding of how that particular issue came to be. For instance, stories about chivalry, heroism, patriotism, and martyrdom are written in vivid imagery and descriptions. This is to make it so that readers like me can understand the characters and the plight they face. This includes the values and norms that society had during the specific time the story was in. From society’s internal and external structure in the past, we can easily deduce how a character’s mo...
